Alternatives To ADHD Medication

In 2016, over 6 million children in the United States had been diagnosed with ADHD at some point in their life. Although medication is often prescribed rashly without a proper evaluation of the child, there are alternatives to medication, such as: behavior therapy, activity/exercise, diet, and essential fatty acids. Behavior therapy equips parents with the skills and strategies to help their child and empowers the child by teaching them ways to replace problem causing behavior with positive behavior, as well as work through their emotions. Behavior Therapy is an effective way to manage ADHD without the effects of medication. Regular physical activity has been shown to increase cognitive performance and brain health among children. Diet plays a major role in the functioning of the body. When children aren’t getting proper nutrition, it can decrease their attention and alertness. Diets that are high in sugar can cause kids to be restless and decrease attention. Multiple studies on the effects of Omega-3 Fatty Acids on children diagnosed with ADHD showed that Omega-3 Fatty acid supplementation decreased ADHD symptoms.
