Women who are pregnant or are trying to become pregnant should make sure they are getting enough folate/folic acid in their diet. It is recommended that pregnant women get 400-800 mcg of folic acid per day. Folic acid helps to prevent miscarriage and birth defects. Folic acid can be taken in a supplement, like a prenatal vitamin, and there are also lots of ways to get folate through food. Foods that are high in folate are broccoli, spinach, lettuce, asparagus, okra, lemons, bananas, melons, yeast, beans, mushrooms, kidney, beef liver, eggs, tomato juice, and orange juice.

Folate isn’t just for pregnant women. Folate is important for everyone and can be used for memory loss, osteoporosis, depression, hearing loss related to age, sleep problems, and muscle pain just to name a few. Adults should be getting 400 mcg per day, or more if folic acid is being used as a treatment for something.

Summer is here and the kids are out of school! So much stuff is going on – sports camps, family vacations, and going on camping trips. When I was a kid, I was always most excited about staying up late at night and sleeping in the next morning. I’m sure many other kids feel the same way. Even though we all do this, it’s important that sleep be taken seriously, especially in childhood. Sleep is the main way children develop physically and mentally. The younger the child, the more important it is!

Our circadian rhythm, or the sleep-wake cycle, is regulated by light times and dark times. When the sun sets and the sky becomes dark, a hormone called melatonin is signaled that aids in the sleep cycle. This cycle usually doesn’t fully form until 3-6 months old. This explains why newborns have such a sporadic sleep cycle! It may be crazy to think that a child will spend 40% of his or her childhood asleep!

It can be difficult to tell when a child is not getting enough sleep. Signs that kids are ti...

We started this series last week with Alignment. Most of the feed back that I have gotten so far was in regard to the alignment in core values. Being objective about assessing our own priorities can be a challenge. If this is something you would like support with, contact or ask us - Either Jamie or myself can walk you through some differents ways to get clear on what that is for you. If you haven't read last weeks A.R.M.E.D. for health - part 1, I invite you to check it out!

This week, we will be looking at something a little more familiar yet also often times hard to accomplish in our hectic lifestyles.

Rest and Relaxation:

How many hours of sleep do you get each night? Information out there about what is ideal is often contradictory. I read in a magazine a few years back that woman have reduced risk of heart disease, diabetes and cancer sleeping 5 – 6 hours per night. In this same study, they stated men require 7 – 8 for proper body repair and increased immune function. In sp...
