Breastfeeding should always be considered first before formula feeding but there are instances where breastfeeding isn’t an option and formula must be used, or supplemented alongside breastfeeding. Many of the baby formulas sold in the United States have corn syrup as one of the main ingredients. This is not healthy and for that reason, we suggest ordering formula online from a few european companies. Europe has better farming practices; the ingredients used in infant formula can have no detectable levels of pesticide residue. This standard for pesticide levels is what we consider as organic. Infant formula also comes in stages: stage 1 (birth to 6 months), stage 2 (6+ months), and stage 3 (toddlers). As babies are quickly growing, their nutrition requirements are also rapidly changing. European formulas also are generally more conservative with additives and have a shorter ingredients list. The brands that we recommend are HiPP (from Germany, UK, or Dutch), Holle, and Lebenswert. Fat in the diet have been regarded as detrimental to our bodies for the longest time.  However, fats are beneficial and necessary for proper function. Fats are essential in helping the brain and nervous system develop. They are also a great source of energy and they are easily stored.  Other benefits of healthy fats include helping the body absorb vitamins, developing hormones, insulation of the nervous tissues, and making our bodies feel full so we don’t overeat.  


If you are trying to find different ways to get healthy fats in your child’s diet, there are several different foods to try. Meat, fatty fish, eggs, and nuts are always a great source of healthy fat. Salmon, in particular, is excellent. Avocados are another fantastic and delicious way to obtain the proper type of fat. They are also easy to chew!  When cooking other food, try using extra virgin olive oil or coconut oil – these also are high in healthy fats.

I was recently introduced to this "forbidden rice" and it is now on my "standards and staples" list. Forbidden rice is also known as black rice, purple rice or longevity rice. This is not something new... it is an ancient grain that has been served for years in Asian countries. 

Brown rice is much more popular in health circiles but black rice has more powerful disease-fighting antioxidants, it containes fiber and has anti-inflammatory properties. It has a more nutty flavor, similar to brown rice and maintains density greater than white rice.

A 1/3 cup serving of cooked black rice contains approximately (in daily recommended values):

  • 200 calories

  • 2 grams of fat

  • 43 grams of carbohydrates

  • 3 grams of fiber

  • 6 grams of protein

  • 4% DV for iron (bonus for vegetarians)

  • 4% DV for selenium (great immune booster)

  • 120% DV for Manganese

I have been a long time self-proclaimed meat-a-tarian. I have noticed, the past 4 months or so, my preferences have shifted some and I have had a craving for more vegetable based meals. Butter Chicken is one of my favorite meals. I love Thai and Indian food and I enjoy cooking but with my busy schedule, I don't get to it as often as I would like. With a lighter afternoon, I felt inspired and came up with this recipe that seems worth sharing: 


I used tofu, but making this again, I would use potatoes instead (I don't really enjoy the texture of tofu, nor the idea that soy is most often GMO) My last time buying tofu was in grad school when I was "vegetarian". Being new to blogging, I would like to ask for your patience and understanding as we play around in sharing info until we find a flow and our true voice through writing. Our intention with this is to share tips and tricks in regard to health, fitness, nutrition, stress reduction and management, parenting, kid stuff and more, as well as share stories and testimonials from around the office and around our South Sound Community.


We have expanded our hours!

We now offer Friday afternoon hours with Dr. Megan adjusting as well as Saturday morning hours every week with Dr. Megan, Dr. Genie and/or Dr. Jess. Our Saturday hours will remain 9 – 11 am.
