In 2016, over 6 million children in the United States had been diagnosed with ADHD at some point in their life. Although medication is often prescribed rashly without a proper evaluation of the child, there are alternatives to medication, such as: behavior therapy, activity/exercise, diet, and essential fatty acids. Behavior therapy equips parents with the skills and strategies to help their child and empowers the child by teaching them ways to replace problem causing behavior with positive behavior, as well as work through their emotions. Behavior Therapy is an effective way to manage ADHD without the effects of medication. Regular physical activity has been shown to increase cognitive performance and brain health among children. Diet plays a major role in the functioning of the body. When children aren’t getting proper nutrition, it can decrease their attention and alertness. Diets that are high in sugar can cause kids to be restless and decrease attention. Multiple studies on the ef...

Exercising while pregnant is safe for women who are healthy and do not have any pregnancy complications. Not only is it safe, there are also multiple benefits, including: easing back pain, reducing constipation, promoting healthy weight gain, and decrease the risk of gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and cesarean delivery. It is recommended that pregnant women exercise at a moderate intensity for 150 minutes per week. Some exercises that are safe during pregnancy are: walking, swimming/water workouts, stationary bicycling, and modified yoga and pilates. Some other physical activities can be done if you have experience, but it is important to contact your health care professional to discuss what is safe for you. There are some precautions to take while exercising while pregnant. It is important to drink enough water to avoid dehydration and overheating.  It’s also important to not stand still or lay flat on your back for extended periods of time. Lying on your back can cause blood to...

Women who are pregnant or are trying to become pregnant should make sure they are getting enough folate/folic acid in their diet. It is recommended that pregnant women get 400-800 mcg of folic acid per day. Folic acid helps to prevent miscarriage and birth defects. Folic acid can be taken in a supplement, like a prenatal vitamin, and there are also lots of ways to get folate through food. Foods that are high in folate are broccoli, spinach, lettuce, asparagus, okra, lemons, bananas, melons, yeast, beans, mushrooms, kidney, beef liver, eggs, tomato juice, and orange juice.

Folate isn’t just for pregnant women. Folate is important for everyone and can be used for memory loss, osteoporosis, depression, hearing loss related to age, sleep problems, and muscle pain just to name a few. Adults should be getting 400 mcg per day, or more if folic acid is being used as a treatment for something.

There are three different settings to give birth in: your home, a birthing center, and the hospital. Home birth may seem like a new concept to some, but before the 1900’s, home births were the norm. Home birth are a safe alternative for women who are having a healthy, low-risk pregnancy. During a home birth, a midwife will come to the home once a woman starts to go into labor. Midwives usually bring with them the following:

  • Oxygen for the baby if needed

  • IV’s for mom if she becomes dehydrated or needs additional nutrients

  • Sterile gloves, gauze pads, cotton hat for the baby, drop cloths, waterproof covers for the bed, a thermometer, a pan for sitz baths after birth

  • Fetoscopes or ultrasonic stethoscopes

  • Medications to slow or stop a hemorrhage

  • Special herbal preparations, homeopathic remedies, massage supplies/techniques and perhaps even acupuncture needles

  • Items for suturing tears

Home births have multiple benefits including: being less expensive, provi...
