I was recently introduced to this "forbidden rice" and it is now on my "standards and staples" list. Forbidden rice is also known as black rice, purple rice or longevity rice. This is not something new... it is an ancient grain that has been served for years in Asian countries. 

Brown rice is much more popular in health circiles but black rice has more powerful disease-fighting antioxidants, it containes fiber and has anti-inflammatory properties. It has a more nutty flavor, similar to brown rice and maintains density greater than white rice.

A 1/3 cup serving of cooked black rice contains approximately (in daily recommended values):

  • 200 calories

  • 2 grams of fat

  • 43 grams of carbohydrates

  • 3 grams of fiber

  • 6 grams of protein

  • 4% DV for iron (bonus for vegetarians)

  • 4% DV for selenium (great immune booster)

  • 120% DV for Manganese

The 5th and final step of this series is Diet. This is a topic that can (and will likely) have many more detailed posts in the future. Diet is such a broad topic that really deserves a great deal of attention and personal specificity as every body is different. Diet can also span food, beverages and supplements. It can be for health, for weight loss, for performance, function and more. Regardless of our level of consciousness around our diet – we are always on a diet… our diet is really just what and how we consume.

For this particular post, I will share a simple guideline toward a food guide that most all can follow with some level of success.

So here we are on part 4 of our 5 part series. I hope that you have gotten value from the previous 3 and that this series has started a frame work of thought around the simplicity of shifting some simple habits to create a higher level of health for yourself and your loved ones. This next segment is one that we are all too familiar with.


Moving the body is a nutrient that is needed for proper health and wellness. Like food, without movement, our bodies would deteriorate and breakdown. There are also many forms of exercise to choose from. You don’t have to be Jack Lalanne pumping it out at the gym 7 days per week to reap the rewards. Increasing the heart rate for 30 minutes per day is the minimum recommendation for health maintenance. That doesn’t account for health improvement. At this point, most everyone has heard that eating vegetables is a good idea, especially leafy green veggies that are dark and deep in color. Chlorophyll is the green pigment that gives these vegetables their color and is a major part of the chemistry around plant life. Specifically, with photosynthesis. Mental Attitude:

This is an area that is often overlooked in the health conversation, however, our mind has a huge impact on our health. Our body doesn’t know the difference between a negative body thought and physical trauma. From a neurological perspective – they run on the same pathway. Instead of thinking you are having a bad hair day, you might as well smack yourself and go on with your day. Do you remember the commercial that had a stick figure man walking under the cloud and they said… “depression hurts”? Well, truly – it does, or at the very least, it can.
